Hearing Aid Technology

Hearing aid technology has changed over the years and now offers more choices for those experiencing hearing loss than ever before.

HOW HAS HEARING AID TECHNOLOGY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
In the past, hearing aids used analog technology. This type of technology improved the user’s overall hearing by simply amplifying the sounds. However, the sounds were not very distinguishable.

When hearing aids began using micro-computer chips, the sounds were then able to be digitally processed through what is called digital signal processing (DSP). Digital sounds are able to be analyzed and the device can distinguish between the different levels of sound such as background noises versus music. This gives the user clear, crisp, and distortion-free sounds. DSP also allows programming flexibility to meet each individual’s hearing loss needs.

TECHNOLOGIES TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A HEARING AID
When it comes to choosing a hearing aid that is more up to date, there are a few technologies to consider to make your hearing aids more beneficial.

Wireless connectivity allows multiple hearing aids to work together. The technology allows them to communicate with each other like our normal hearing ears do. This improves overall hearing and allows users to detect what’s in their environment easier.

Telecoil is another technology that is beneficial for the everyday use of hearing aids. It allows users to talk on the phone and use other hearing assistive devices without getting the “whistling” feedback.

For those who want the capability to plug into remote devices directly in your hearing aid, then look for hearing aids equipped with direct audio input. With this type of technology, you can plug directly into devices such as your computer, TV, or MP3 player.
